Writing Exhibits

This page collects things I've written for the rest of the world.

Tutorials

I've got a plan to create some modular tutorial "packages." (Link to a separate page that lists those and the individual modules.) I've benefitted from a lot of online tutorials, so it's time to give back to the Internet!

  • Math (trig in particular; i guess algebra too; matrix math would be helpful to me to write about! and of course Probability: probability calculus, permutations & combinations, binomial probability, problems (frequentist vs Bayesian, base rate fallacy)...)
  • Programming (simple games focusing on different modules: nibbles for SVGs, e.g.)
  • Game Theory (refer back to statistics, utilitarianism, decision theory, priz dilemma & caterpillar vs rationality -- so, some links between tutorials and just-plain essays, I guess)
  • Game Design, if i can think of anything worth mentioning. (There's the binomial probability thing, and whatever else might be useful from stats..) At least talk about whatever principles I can come up with: race mechanics, kingmaking, "dynamic difficulty adjustment"... strategy vs. tactics vs. luck. The "fun per person-hour" metric.

Essays

I've long imagined having a place that I can point to that contains the best version of various arguments I like to make. Naturally, if I get around to writing such documents, I'll need a list of them so anyone can find them. If they can be tagged, then we'll also want to list the categories/tags here too, at least if there get to be a large enough number of articles.

  • My music theory booklet (if that's not a tutorial)
  • Any expansions of the things on Notes page that isn't quite a tutorial--scientific and historical summaries, etc.
  • FAQs/Personal screeds (vegetarianism, politics, cosmology (agnosticism vs. atheism), other beliefs)

So, yeah. That's a pretty wordy way of saying "I should include a blog section," I guess. (Basically another hijacking of Vanilla discussions, but this time without any association with the tutorial modules is the idea.)

Stories

Before I became a philosophy major, I was a creative writing major in college. I need to develop a daily writing habit. (I need to develop several good daily habits.) So I might resume some earlier efforts to create "micro stories," and I may as well stick them up here. (Maybe those will double as optional never-ending story seeds, or else they'll have to remain separate. I don't know.)

FYI, I'm presently tying together the rough draft of a (fantasy) novel. Right now it would be around 1,000 pages if printed as a paperback. Probably around half of it should be cut out, though. It doesn't strike me as being a good book as things stand, but maybe that's not surprising: my mantra in cranking out the original text was "try to write shitty." (And I did!) I don't plan on posting the book here or anything, at least not until I decide it's unpublishable or something.
